PortaServer – mini web server

PortaServer – mini web server for your WiFi capable Blackberry v1.1.29

PortaServer allows you to use your WiFi capable BlackBerry as a web server, and access its file system from any web browser on the same network. You can view or download pictures, music, videos, documents or web pages directly from your handset over a WiFi connection.

The web server provides a password to protect your data from random visitors; this password is displayed on the main screen of PortaServer.

The password will not, however, protect you from targeted attacks or when using public WiFi networks. We recommend that you only use PortaServer in a secure environment (e.g. your home or office network)

Upon launching, PortaServer displays the URL to connect to your BlackBerry, and the password required to access the device.

To use, simply turn on PortaServer, enter the URL it provides into a web browser on another device (computer, PDA, or other), enter the password, and you will be able to browse the phone’s files.

PortaServer only supports wifi at this time.

Based on our experience testing PortaServer with various browsers, we found Internet Explorer to be less reliable than Firefox when loading large files (e.g. mp3’s) from PortaServer.

This is a free application. We encourage you to send us your comments, suggestions, or complaints, but we can’t guarantee that you will always receive a response.

New in version 1.1.21: Slideshow for image directories. As with other functions, it appears that the slideshow works less reliably with IE than with other browsers such as Firefox.

Don’t use multiple clients concurrently in slideshow mode, it can overwhelm the server. The slideshow is an example of the type of web pages that you can host on PortaServer.

1.1.24: Fixed a problem that caused authentication to fail when the user name field was not empty.

1.1.27: Slower slideshow and improved stability

1.1.29: Fixed another authentication related bug that caused compatibility issues with Chrome

Browse your handset’s file system using a web browser

View or download files from your handset over wifi

Host static web pages, documents and media on your device

Can run in background while you use other handset functions

Minimum requirements:
Operating System
4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 Non-Touch, 4.7 Touch Screen

News: Blackberry Down for 8 hours

“BlackBerry customers throughout North America were without e-mail and Internet services for more than eight hours after a widespread outage that lasted until early Wednesday.

Customers began receiving e-mails again around 2:45 a.m. ET. Initial reports of outages came from BlackBerry around 6:30 p.m.

BlackBerry did not give a reason for the outage. It was the second such outage for users in less than a week.

At one point, BlackBerry estimated 100 percent of its customers in North America were affected by the outage, according to an e-mail sent to customers.

“BlackBerry subscribers may be unable to send or receive messages. Subscribers may also be unable to register their device, roam in another location, or use other services such as Internet browsing,” the e-mail said.

“BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers may be unable to use the BlackBerry Internet Service web site or perform activities such as creating new accounts, integrating third-party email accounts, or viewing email attachments.”

Research in Motion Ltd., maker of the devices, said it had about 32 million global BlackBerry subscribers as of the end of August.

Gangguan RIM di North America

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

PC World reports:

Research in Motion is still investigating why BlackBerry users throughout North America couldn’t access their e-mail this morning.

The company says the BlackBerry outage is over, Reuters reports, but that some users’ e-mail will still be delayed as servers send out all the queued correspondences. On Crackberry.com, some users have reportedly received e-mails immediately by pulling the battery on their phones, but that hasn’t worked for everyone and it’s not clear whether that workaround is just coincidental with the service coming back online.

Bloomberg reports that the outage affected BlackBerry phones on all four U.S. wireless carriers. Canada’s largest carrier, Rogers, also confirmed the interruption. The outage only affected e-mail, as Internet and text messaging didn’t suffer.

RIM uses an Internet-based service to push e-mails to the handheld without going through an enterprise server. This appears to be the root of the problem, as corporate users didn’t experience the same delays as consumers.

Why did this happen? RIM has yet to explain the issue, but previous outages may reveal clues. In 2007, RIM blamed one lengthy service interruption on a new software routine. This routine was supposed to optimize system cache memory, but instead caused an e-mail outage that lasted at least 12 hours. RIM said its back-up system proved to be inadequate as well.

Last year, another e-mail outage lasted for a few hours. RIM said it ran into problems while upgrading the capacity of its infrastructure in order to satisfy demand. Previous upgrades had gone off without incident, but perhaps this is just another case of growing pains for the smartphone maker as it tries to accommodate more consumers.

RIM Updates BlackBerry Server Media Software

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

The BlackBerry maker added multiple features to its BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Media Sync software.

By Marin Perez
InformationWeek

Research In Motion (RIM) released software updates to help BlackBerry users work and play.

The company made available Monday the BlackBerry Enterprise Server SP1, and it adds multiple enhancements for companies using RIM’s corporate mail deployment. The update, which is compatible with Microsoft’s Exchange and IBM’s Lotus Notes, boosts the IT department’s ability to manage devices by adding new administrative permissions, supporting Lotus Notes ID vault, and improving the BlackBerry Administration Service by adding more options.

The BlackBerry Monitoring Service has also been improved, and the home page now features performance data, statistics, and graphs. BES administrators can also view deeper configuration data like transaction logs and index fragmentation, as well as use the database components to manage data attributes.

On the end-user side, the BES update gives BlackBerry users the ability to view BlackBerry Monitoring Service alarms, messages, and statuses from the handset. The update also improves the calendar syncing by correcting inconsistencies between the handset and the smartphone.

The company also released the 3.0 version of its Media Sync software, which enables BlackBerry users to manage and import multimedia files to their handsets. The most noticeable new feature is an overhauled user interface which RIM said is aimed at making syncing quicker and simpler. The 3.0 version also enables users to sync images, and memory management software will automatically reduce the size of large photos to let users hold more photos on their devices. As with previous versions, the software integrates with Apple’s iTunes to manage and sync unprotected music files and playlists with the handset.

IT departments can download the latest BES software from RIM’s Web site, and the 3.0 version of Media Sync can be downloaded here
